The idea of using a small white cube in a photographic project to represent either the inner consciousness or the exterior world as perceived by that inner consciousness, first occurred to me some time ago and I have recently started to produce work based on this. For no particular reason, I began by attempting to illustrate the common human impulse of striving to achieve a goal, overcoming difficulties on the way, and gave the work the title “The Ascent of Man”.
Originally conceived as a series of prints to be displayed in a single row, I realised that this would be too demanding of wall space if shown in a group exhibition. After a positive reaction to the images from the Herts Foto Forum group, and the selection by them of three to be used in the website publicity for our March 2017 exhibition, I decided to present all 9 images in the form of a vertical mobile with a self-supporting frame.
